Most aisle widths are inherited. Someone measured a hall once, the plan worked, and the same dimensions came back every year regardless of how many visitors turned up or what the stands ended up selling. It usually holds, until the year it does not.

A better starting point is the number of people you expect in the hall at its busiest quarter of an hour, not across the whole day. Peak density is what makes an aisle feel generous or impossible, and it is the figure most organisers never write down.

Start from the busiest fifteen minutes

Take your expected attendance, then work out how it arrives. A consumer exhibition with one opening time behaves nothing like a three-day trade show where visitors trickle in from nine until four. If ticket sales and check-in data live in the same system, last year's arrival curve is the most useful document you have.

From that curve, estimate how many people are inside during the peak period, then split them across the aisles that actually carry traffic. Main routes between entrance and stage take a disproportionate share; back-of-hall aisles take far less.

Peak density decides how an aisle feels. Daily attendance decides almost nothing.

Three widths, not one

Halls read better when aisle width is deliberately uneven. A single repeated dimension makes the floor feel like a spreadsheet and gives visitors no sense of where they are.

  • Main routes: wide enough for two-way flow plus people stopping to look. These connect entrances, stages and catering.
  • Secondary aisles: comfortable for browsing, narrow enough that stands on both sides stay in view.
  • Service and back aisles: sized for build-up traffic and emergency access, not for visitors.

The difference between these three should be visible on the plan. If a visitor cannot tell a main route from a browsing aisle by looking at it, the wayfinding has to do work the layout should have done.

Check it against the stands you plan to sell

Aisle width and stand depth compete for the same floor. Deep stands with build-up on the aisle edge eat into the route; island stands with four open sides pull people off it. Price and position interact here too, since the stands you can charge most for are usually the ones that need the most space around them.

Draw the layout with the stand mix you actually intend to sell rather than a uniform grid, and the pinch points show up before exhibitors find them. Adjusting a plan is cheap. Adjusting it after ninety exhibitors have booked is not.

What to do with the result

Write the three widths down and keep them with the event template. Next year the arrival curve will be slightly different and the stand mix will have shifted, but you will be adjusting a number you can defend rather than guessing again from scratch.
